Plus August's Quiet $193M Deal Flow Roundup

Sports Tech & Venture Intelligence. Every Week.

August's was the quietest month of the year so far as combined deal flow (venture + M&A) stayed under $200 million. Is everyone still on holiday? We're waiting for the post-summer energy to kick in. Full monthly breakdown below.

Meanwhile September kicks off hot as Polymarket raised $1 billion at a $21 billion valuation. A couple of weeks ago we looked at the evolution of fantasy sports from bedroom drafts to billion-dollar businesses. A similar deep dive on prediction markets coming soon.

Sports Tech Monthly Investment Roundup

After July's $1.83B M&A blockbuster, August cooled sharply. Venture funding slowed to just $14.4M across 9 deals, the quietest month of the year by a wide margin, with no $10M+ deals. The weight of the month sat in M&A, where Tabcorp's agreed $178.9M takeover of wagering-tech firm Betmakers stood as the only disclosed deal among six. Combined, total dealflow reached $193.3M.

Here's a quick summary:

  • Geography: With so little venture capital in play, the funding map was thin. By deal count the USA led, followed by Japan, then Canada, France, the UK and Brazil. By capital the order flipped, with Canada out front on the back of Peripheral Labs' $8.7M seed, ahead of France and the US. On the M&A side, the USA and Australia accounted for two deals each, with the UK making up the fifth.

  • Sectors: For the first time in months, 'For Fans' drew nothing on the funding side. 'For Executives' led at $9.1M (63.6%), with 'For Athletes' taking the rest at $5.2M (36.4%). The five acquisitions split across 'For Athletes' (two), 'For Executives' (two) and 'For Fans' (one).

  • Top Deals: Peripheral Labs’ $8.7M seed round sent it to the top of a quiet funding table. M&A was where the money moved as Tabcorp agreed to acquire Betmakers for $178.9M, the month's only disclosed deal. Among the undisclosed transactions, VALD was the busiest acquirer, picking up both performance-testing maker GymAware and athlete-training platform Bridge Athletic. Elsewhere, DAZN acquired commercial-streaming platform Everpass; Sportz Interactive acquired AI-highlights firm Magnifi; and HitAi acquired fitness-gaming developer Quell.
