Sports Tech Monthly Investment Roundup

September roared back after August's lull, with funding rebounding to $846.3M across a rare three-way split: For Fans, For Athletes and For Executives each drew between $250M and $300M.

The top rounds were spread just as widely, prediction market Polymarket ($300M), sports-media firm Playfly Sports ($250M) and active-play hardware maker Nex ($150M). M&A added $300.9M more, led by Starman Optical's $285M takeover of action-camera icon GoPro. Combined, total dealflow reached about $1.15B.

Here's a quick summary:

  • Geography: American companies took the vast majority of the total on the back of Polymarket, Playfly and Nex. India was the clear second market, driven by Ultrahuman's $70M raise, combining equity and debt. All three acquisitions were US-based, putting M&A at 100% USA.

  • Sectors: September was unusually balanced. 'For Fans' edged the table at $301.5M (36.4%), almost all of it Polymarket. 'For Athletes' followed at $268.3M (32.4%), led by Nex and Ultrahuman, and 'For Executives' took $258.1M (31.2%), carried by Playfly Sports. On the M&A side, both GoPro and Hyrox sat in 'For Athletes', with the FanEngine deal unclassified.

  • Top Deals: Polymarket raised $300M to top the funding table, followed by Playfly Sports at $250M (debt), Nex at $150M (Series E) and Ultrahuman at $65M (Series C). On the M&A side, Starman Optical agreed to acquire GoPro for $285M, GameSquare acquired the IP assets of FanEngine for $15.9M, and L Catterton acquired fitness-racing series Hyrox for an undisclosed sum.
